Jumpcut was an intensive film-making program for young people aged 16–25, run by Film City Futures in association with Film City Glasgow and Sigma Films.

It gave participants the opportunity to form a production company and make a professional short film with a budget, developing invaluable hands-on experience in an industry environment.

Update: Previous Jumpcut productions took place in 2014, 2015 and 2016. We are not currently accepting applications but if you are interested in applying in future, please join our mailing list to be kept up-to-date with future opportunities.

Each year, around 25 young people aged 16–25 formed a production company to make a professional, budgeted short film. We recruited young people who demonstrated experience in or commitment to different areas within the industry, ranging from electricians and hair and make-up designers to location managers, editors and directors.

The selected crew were then placed in defined roles that are directly relevant to their career ambitions and skillsets, enabling them to develop hands-on experience in an industry environment. Under the guidance of professional industry mentors, participants learned about pre-production, production and post-production, and were given the opportunity to undertake production roles that a majority of them had never done before.

Each Jumpcut production was based at Film City Glasgow and supported by Sigma Films staff, as well as specific project staff and industry mentors. In the past, participants have had the chance to learn from Brian Coffey (Producer, Starred Up), Paddy Higson (Producer, The Magdalene Sisters), Zam Salin (Director, Up There), Grant Cameron (Producer, Orphans), Colin Monie (Editor, Shetland), Dave Arthur (Editor, God Help the Girl) and Susan Clark (1st Assistant Director, BBC Drama).

JUMPCUT GRADUATES

In previous years, Jumpcut graduates have gone on to various opportunities in the screen industry, including paid BBC traineeships, BFI Film Academy programmes, short film commissions and roles with production companies.

Graduates from Jumpcut 2016 moved into roles on productions including OutlanderJonathan Creek and Hush.

“We are very proud of Jumpcut.  It has been designed to answer specific industry needs and is the only project of its kind that gives newcomers an intensive, mentor-led, fast track into the industry while receiving full exposure to every aspect of the film-making process in a professional, industrial environment. The results to date have been phenomenal, with over 70% of previous graduates going straight into the industry.”

- Gillian Berrie, Director of Sigma Films and Film City Glasgow

WHO CAN GET INVOLVED?

Please note that we are not currently accepting applications for Jumpcut.

We accepted applications from young people from diverse backgrounds, who demonstrated a passion for film and television and commitment to working hard. Designed to reduce barriers to entering the industry, participants are not required to have a great deal of experience, but must be able to demonstrate an interest in film and filmmaking as a potential career.

The initiative was delivered with the support of Creative Scotland’s Screen Sector Skills Fund and there was no fee for taking part.

“The skills development and training opportunities offered by this inspiring initiative are essential to the development of screen talent that is reflective of Scotland’s diverse culture. This and the wider work supported by the Screen Skills Fund underlines our commitment to developing skills and nurturing talent to ensure the future success of the sector.”

- Natalie Usher, Director of Screen at Creative Scotland
